Should Christian’s meditate?

Updated: May 29, 2023

MEDITATION

Is it Christian? YES!!!! Welllll, it depends on what exactly you are doing I suppose.

Back in the day, meditation for a Christian was a no brainer but unfortunately today, it has been tainted by new age mysticism. Satan is always trying to create false teachings that mimic Christian ones.

Meditation & contemplation are essential to the Christian walk though. Meditation follows hearing and precedes prayer.

In meditation, we are intensely focusing our minds on a spiritual issue. Thinking on Gods truth to the point of changing us. It is also a form of prayer. When we meditate on scripture, we are also digesting the word, which encourages prayer and self examination.

It is like the chewing/digesting part of eating. We don’t just put food in our mouths and swallow it. We have to break it down first by chewing it and mulling it over. Same same.

In meditation, we turn to our willful soul and point it to the truth. Then we turn to prayer & praise. Meditation is not only “ok” for a Christian, it is necessary. Meditation SATURATES us in Gods truth.

It helps us gain spiritual knowledge. It also illuminates truth so that we are able to see the lies of the world as what they are. Lies.

Saturating ourselves in meditation also helps us recognize that God is ALWAYS present. Reminding us to see ourselves, others and the world through the lens of God. To see the good things in life and acknowledge they should point to God.

It lays the groundwork to a life of prayer & obedience. It calibrates our internal compass. Meditation and contemplation also encourage a focused heart and help us take our thoughts captive in our everyday life.

It is often in silence that God illuminates His presence. I know this is true for me. Times of silence and solitude are important in waiting on the Lord.

So just like James 1:22 tells us; “"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."

Let’s not just read the word and nod ours heads as if reading it was enough. Let’s MEDITATE on it day & night, allow it to SATURATE our lives and MOVE us to action in the direction God wants us to go. 🤍

Post inspired by the scriptures below and a book I just finished reading about Jonathan Edwards life.
